WHU Team Won the Champion of NILOS International Law of the Sea Moot Court Competition in China

NILOS International Law of the Sea Moot Court Competition China Selection Competition was successfully held online  on April 9, 2022. After a fierce competition, the Wuhan University team finally won the first place. Our team will represent the Chinese region to participate in the international competition and compete with the teams from other regions in this May.

NILOS International Law of the Sea Moot Court Competition is the most famous moot court competition in the field of international law of the sea. The competition is organized by NILOS and hosted by China University of Political Science and Law. The competition simulates the proceedings of ITLOS. The competition is held in English, with two parts: the selection of pleadings and the mock trial. Judges of ITLOS and internationally renowned experts were invited to be the judges of the competition.

Our team is coached by Prof. Otto Spijkers and Associate Researcher Yu Chuxiao. The team consists of Cai Zhiyuan and Shi Yao, Master's students of Class of 2020, Li Lu, Master's students of Class of 2021, Wang Zixuan, undergraduate student of Class of 2018, and Wang Yuanfei, undergraduate student of Class of 2019. Among them, Cai Zhiyuan and Wang Zixuan served as oral debaters, Shi Yao and Li Lu served as the main researchers, and Wang Yuanfei provided off-court assistance.

                                             

 

The competition had a long preparation period. During the six-month-long period from October 2021 to May 2022, ranging from team member selection to domestic breakout, teachers from Wuhan University Undergraduate School, Wuhan University School of Law, Wuhan University Institute of Environmental Law, Wuhan University China Institute of Boundary and Ocean Studies, Wuhan University Institute for International Studies, and Wuhan University Institute of International Law provided help and support to the team members in all aspects. The excellent results of the competition could not be achieved without the efforts of each team member. The solid foundation of knowledge and excellent expression ability of the students made us the winner of the competition.

 

 

The WHU team was able to achieve excellent results in this competition, reflecting the excellent achievements of Wuhan University in cultivating high quality foreign-related legal talents. In the next month, the team members will continue to cooperate and work hard, summarize carefully, and show their elegance in the international competition.
