From March 28 to April 3, 2022, the 19th Willem C. Vis (East) International Commercial Arbitration Moot ("Vis (East) Moot") was successfully held online, and the Wuhan University team was selected from 140 teams around the world. The team finally won the top 32 in the world and Li Sentao was nominated as the best debater.
"The Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot is one of the largest and oldest moot competitions in the world, organized by the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law (UNCITRAL), the University of Vienna, and the East Asia Branch of FCIArb. It is the only moot organized by the United Nations in the world. Oral arguments are held in Hong Kong (Vis (East) Moot) and Vienna (Vis Moot) from March to April each year. The "Vis (East) Moot" in Hong Kong and the "Vis Moot" in Vienna attracted teams from 140 and 365 institutions from all over the world. Among them are Harvard University, Freiburg University, Hamburg University, Heidelberg University, National University of Singapore, Chinese University of Hong Kong and other famous universities. The participating universities in mainland China include Peking University, Tsinghua University and the University of International Business and Economics.
WHU team was coached by Associate Professor Qiao Xiongbing from Wuhan University's Institute of International Law, with Wang Jingru and Zhu Wenjie, Class of 2020 graduate students from the School of Law, as coaches. The team members include Li Sentao, a 2019 graduate student of the Law School, Luo Xiaoke and Lin Jidong, 2018 undergraduates of the Law School, Chen Xinya and Xu Jinghan, 2019 undergraduates of the Law School. Among them, Li Sentao and Chen Xinya participated in Vis (East) Moot oral arguments as upper court members. Lin Jidong, Xu Jinghan and Luo Xiaoke participated in Vis Moot oral arguments as upper court members.
Previously, the WHU team won the second prize in the 19th "International Commercial Arbitration Moot" competition. The team members, Li Sentao and Lin Jidong won the honorary title of Best Debater. In the first Singapore edition of the Permanent Court of Arbitration Willem C. Vis Pre-Moot organized by PCA, our team also performed well and won the second place. In the 6th AIAC Pre-Moot for Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot, hosted by AIAC, Wuhan University was awarded the Honorable Mention for the Best Respondent Memorandum.
The outstanding achievement of WHU team in this international competition could not be achieved without the support of Wuhan University Law School and Institute of International Law. The outstanding performance of the team members could not be achieved without the valuable guidance provided by Ma Tianyu, Xiao Weichu and other outstanding seniors of previous Wuhan University Vis Moot teams. The performance of the WHU team in this competition fully demonstrated the elegance of Wuhan University students, which is a symbol of Wuhan University's achievements in the construction of "first-class universities and first-class disciplines".
