Wuhan University Research Institute of International Law Successfully Held the Round Table Seminar on "EU trade policy and China-EU economic and trade relations in the process of global system reform"

On November 14, 2019, the Seminar on "EU trade policy and China-EU economic and trade relations in the global system reform" was successfully held in the 120 hall of the law school. The guests of this round table seminar mainly include officials from the trade remedy department of the Council of Europe and the delegation of the European Union to China, officials from the trade remedy bureau of the Ministry of Commerce of China and the Department of Commerce of Hubei Province, experts and scholars from the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences and Beijing Normal University, etc.. Professor Xiao Yongping, the director of the research institute of international law of Wuhan University, professor Nie Jianqiang, professor Zhang Hui, professor Li Xueping, professor Qi Tong, associate professor Xiao Jun, associate professor Liao Li, associate researcher Zhu Lei, assistant researcher Xu Jia and assistant researcher Peng Qinxuan also attended the discussion.

Professor Li Fei, the vice president of Wuhan University, met with the representatives in the administrative building. After that, the experts, scholars and EU officials had a lively and in-depth discussion on China-EU trade relations.

There were three main topics in the round table discussion: China-EU economic and trade relations in the context of the great changes in the international economic system; EU trade policy and WTO reform; and China's marketization process from the perspective of China-EU economic and trade relations.

In the first part of the topic, Cheng Weidong, a professor of the Institute of European studies of Chinese Academy of Social Sciences made an in-depth analysis of China-EU relations from the perspective of economic development. Starting from the dilemma of unilateralism, Dr. Xu Jia discussed the current legal system related to China-EU economic and trade.

In the second part, Mr. Leopoldo Rubinacci introduced the current EU policies related to WTO reform. Mr. Yu Benlin elaborated on China's position in the WTO reform and hoped to strengthen communication with EU. Professor Qi Tong analyzed several recent reforms of EU. Associate professor Liao Li talked about the concerns and suggestions in the reform of WTO.

In the third part, Professor Lin Yongsheng made a detailed analysis of the promotion of marketization in the past 40 years of China's reform and opening up. After that, professor Li Xueping and associate professor Xiao Jun conducted in-depth discussions on this topic, pointing out that the recent legislation had a great impact on the establishment of China's market economic status.

The participants had free discussions and exchanges, which enhanced mutual understanding between China and the EU. The round table seminar conveyed the views and suggestions of the Chinese academic community on China-EU economic and trade relations and related legal issues to the EU. The seminar created a good atmosphere for the further development of bilateral relations and achieved positive effect.
