On December 13, the 13th session of the series of introductory lectures on law of Wuhan University hosted by the law school of Wuhan University was held in Room 201, teaching building 4, Ministry of Arts and Science. The theme of the lecture was "Why should we study international economic law". Professor Qi Tong was the lecturer. All 2019 undergraduate students from Wuhan University Law School attended the lecture.

Prof. Qi briefly introduced the two parts of the lecture, which were story and suggestion. He hoped to lead the students into the world of international economic law in the interesting story sharing.

Prof. Qi explained the application of WTO rules with the first story, which made the students understand the importance of mastering the use of WTO rules. The story was related to the agreement on safeguard measures. Developed countries opposed the entry of Chinese products on the grounds that a large number of products would seriously damage their domestic industries.

Then, he told the second story that He Zhiping was arrested by the United States on suspicion of commercial bribery in Africa. It was because of the implementation of "long arm jurisdiction" in the United States. Through the second story, Prof.Qi let us realize the importance of legitimate business activities in foreign countries.

In the last story, he introduced the movie "war wolf 2" and introduced the story of expatriate protection in Libya in 2011. He calmly thought about the problem that China's large investment in Libya had failed though the people had been protected. It was difficult to withdraw overseas investment successfully, which might cause a great loss. International economic law could make a difference in such events.

Through these interesting stories, the students know the rudiments of international economic law.

Next, Prof. Qi gave students some suggestions on how to learn international economic law.

First of all, he hoped that the students could have an international vision. No matter whether the students would major in international law or not in the future, the international vision was an indispensable quality for law students. Under the background of globalization, the rules of international law would have a profound impact on the rules of domestic law.

Secondly, he emphasized that the charm of law originated in practice. Learning from the case helped us understand the law vividly. Oliver Wendell Holmes once said that the life of law didn't lie in logic, but experience.

Finally, he solemnly expressed his opinion that we needed to have patriotism and independent thinking ability. In modern society, to maintain the great power status and international image of China, the research of international law was very important.

After two hours of the lecture, the students raised their hands to ask questions. Zheng Zixin asked Prof. Qi whether the United States had the power to impose sanctions on Chinese enterprises and why Chinese enterprises accepted such sanctions. Prof. Qi pointed out that the nationality of multinational companies no more played an important role. The United States could legally freeze their assets because the companies had businesses in the United States.

Prof. Qi not only explained the basic principles of international economic law, but also expressed his expectation for all the freshmen in the further study. He wished all the students of the law school could make great achievements on the international stage in the future.
