Unit 1: exchange of experience in running journals

In the first unit of the seminar, Zhou Hanhua, the chief editor of Global Law Review, Ma Changshan, the chief editor Journal of East China University of political science and law, Li Jianhua, the chief editor of Contemporary Law Review, and Yuan Fang, the chief editor of China Law Review delivered keynote speeches respectively.

Chief editor Zhou Hanhua recalled his unforgettable experience of studying in Wuhan University. Later, he said that the high standards and high requirements of Global Law Review had never been lowered, and the academic innovation has always been adhered to.

Ma Changshan elaborated his views from three aspects. The first was the preference and publication of the journals. The second was the impetus and pressure of running a journal. It was important to strictly control the academic bottom line. The third was the direction and academic research. He said that we should not only adhere to the correct political position and value orientation, but also keep the purity and autonomy of academic research.

Li Jianhua interpreted several pairs of relations that need to be grasped in order to run the journal well. In the relationship between law journals and law innovation, the development of law innovation provided materials for law journals, and law journals promoted the development of law innovation.

Yuan Fang shared some experience of running China Law Review in terms of the concept of running a journal. In her opinion, the first was to treat the journal as a product and pay attention to the ideological, critical and strategic content, and the second was to pay attention to the promotion and maintenance of the brand.

After a short break, Wen Shiyang, the executive deputy editor of Studies in Law and Business, presided over the second stage of the journal representative's speech.

Ding Jielin made three points. 1. Innovation and scientific nature of law research. 2. Universality and particularity of law research. 3. Social responsibility of law journals.

Yu gaizhi clarified the characteristics of Law. He said that the purpose of Law was to pay attention to the society, face the reality, innovate the theory and promote the rule of law.

You Chenjun emphasized the importance of one’s academic accumulation and the academic inheritance of his works. He thought that law research should pay attention to quality, not just quantity.

Dong Yanbin gave four suggestions. First, journals need to be evaluated more scientifically. Second, we should have not only creative sense, but also old ideas. Third, we should be warm and calm.

Wu Yan talked about the responsibility and innovation of the journal. The social responsibility of journals was reflected in the concern for the needs of the academic community and the volume of publications. The innovation of journals should be reflected in the contents, which should reflect the people's demand for a better life and the transformation of social demand, such as public service, health care, medical care, and privacy protection.

Through the comparison between the present and the past, Jiang Anjie reflected on the "bottleneck" in the development of journals. She hoped that the scholars could sit down and be quiet, devote themselves to learning.

According to Yang Ming, China and Foreign Law encouraged interdisciplinary research and methodology research, especially welcomed articles on new methodology.

Jiao Heping pointed out that the current evaluation model and evaluation system had a great impact on the journal, but Law Science would not deliberately adjust according to the evaluation system, nor catered to the indicators.

Zheng Huaiyu published his opinions on how to maintain the vitality of the journal. The first was innovation, the second was fairness, and the third was responsibility.
