From Case teaching to File Teaching: Reform of Undergraduate Criminal Practice Course in Law School

At 18:30 every Tuesday this semester, the students took the course of criminal case study in the lecture hall 120 of the law school.

On December 17, before the start of the criminal case study, a simple and solemn appointment ceremony was held. Dean Feng Guo and vice dean He Ronggong thanked Mr. Li Shaobo's teaching team for their hard work in undergraduate criminal practice course in the past three years. Dean Feng Guo awarded Mr. Li Shaobo the appointment letter of part-time professor (Practical Teaching) of the law school.

In recent years, law school was actively trying to promote the construction of practical curriculum system and the reform of teaching methods, so as to effectively improve the ability of students to combine theory with practice. Criminal practice course was an important part of overall promotion of practice course construction.

In the past three years, the criminal practice course has been jointly undertaken by Mr. Li Shaobo and his "teaching partner" team. The main members included Dr. Zhao Hui, judge Xia Yuanliang, associate professor Chen Hu, associate professor Guo Beibei, Mr. Zheng Wuping, Ms. Chen Jia and lawyer Tian Peng. This year was the third year since the reform of criminal practice course. The course has evolved from version 1.0 to version 3.0. The teaching method has realized the transformation from traditional case teaching to file teaching. The students had increased rapidly from 17 to 96 this year.

Because of the large number of students, the law school provided 120 lecture hall for the course to accommodate all students. In the past three years, the teaching environment has changed. The students were always enthusiastic and the teaching team still remained true to their original aspiration.

Mr. Chen Hu taught legal argumentation and persuasion, Mr. Guo Beibei taught legal expression and defense writing, Mr. Chen Jia taught judicial psychology, and Mr. Tian Peng introduced the trial questions

The high-quality teaching team and environment fully stimulated the learning initiative of the students. Each learning group actively participated in the class discussion and prepared presentation. At the end of each semester, the criminal practice course received perfect feedback and praise from students.

Feedback from 2017 version 1.0 student: The concept of innovative practical curriculum, file teaching and various teaching methods were excellent enough to live up to the standard for evaluation and summary.

Feedback from 2018 version 2.0 student

Feedback from 2019 version 3.0 student: Real social background, cases and clients were the biggest characteristics of criminal case study. In the class, we had a large number of practice exercises and simulation scenes. In these exercises and discussions, we would review and use the previous knowledge, and found our weakness in learning.

Considering the reform of undergraduate practice course in the law school, vice dean He Ronggong pointed out that law science had strong practicality. Basic theory teaching and practice teaching were the wings of undergraduate law teaching. At present, students had urgent needs and high expectations for practical teaching. In the future, the law school would give priority to the practical curriculum system and improve the practical teaching of our college.

In 2020, let us look forward to the 4.0 course of criminal file teaching.
