The Supreme People's Court of The People's Republic of China recently announced the results of the 2021 major judicial research project. The research team led by Prof. Zhang Wanhong on the topic of people's courts in strengthening and innovating social governance at the grassroots level was selected as one of the top applicants. The co-hosts of the project are Dr. Tong Xiaoning, President of the Dali Bai Autonomous Prefecture Intermediate People's Court in Yunnan Province, and Dr. Lai Bojun, President of the Suining Intermediate People's Court in Sichuan Province.
In this April, the Supreme People's Court issued a tender announcement of major judicial research topics for 2021. After a rigorous evaluation of the declared materials by the Research Office of the Supreme People's Court in conjunction with relevant departments, the announcement was validated by the leadership of the Supreme People's Court. Prof. Zhang Wanhong's team will use a combination of historical and social scene perspectives to reveal the historical logic of the people's courts' participation in social governance and to determine the functional positioning of the people's courts in the new pattern of grassroots social governance. The research will bring together the theoretical research strength of our school and the research backbone of our partner courts to ensure that the research results will have both theoretical innovation and practical guidance value.
