Recently, the winners of the 2022 International Criminal Court Chinese Moot Court Competition were announced. The Wuhan University team won the first prize with the highest total points in China. Wuhan University won the first prize for the best defense counsel brief and the overall prize for the best defense counsel. The team members Ruan Jingcheng and Li Xiang won the Top 10 Advocates for the Defense and Top 10 Advocates for Victim's Representation respectively, which is the best result since our team entered the competition.
This year's competition attracted a new record number of 81 teams from universities across China, including East China University of Political Science and Law, University of Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, Tsinghua University, Central University of Finance and Economics, Beijing Normal University, Tongji University, Fudan University and Southwest University of Political Science and Law. After the evaluation of pleadings, a total of 51 teams advanced to the courtroom defense. After two rounds of fierce competition from April 16 to 17, the competition came to a successful ending.
Our team was formed in May 2021, with Prof. Feng Jiehan from the Law School and the Institute of International Law as the head coach, Master's student Wang Jinghang as the executive coach, and team members including Ruan Jingcheng, Fang Muyun, Li Xiang, Xu Shengnan, Wan Chao, Cui Jinghan, Zou Chuyan and Nisha. During the preparation time of nearly one year, the instructors, executive coaches and the participating team members exercised through the course of "International Law Moot Court", group discussions, pleading writing and courtroom simulation. In the competition, the team members fully demonstrated the solid international law skills, professional court debating ability and cooperation spirit.
The ICC Chinese Moot Court is the largest moot court competition in China, and the only global moot court competition in international law that can be held in Chinese outside of Greater China. The competition is organized by Chinese Initiative on International Criminal Justice with the direct support of the International Criminal Court. The competition aims to spread the values of international criminal law and international judicial institutions in Chinese, and to promote links between universities and the ICC, as well as other international tribunals, international organizations and NGOs.
