Prof. Zhang Wanhong Participated in the Side Event of the 44th Session of the United Nations Human Rights Council
Recently, during the 44th session of the United Nations Human Rights Council, China Society for Human Rights Studies (CSHRS) and the World Peace Council (WPC), a Venezuelan NGO, jointly organized a video side event on racism in the United States. Professor Zhang Wanhong from Wuhan University, and De Zayas, the former Independent Expert of the Human Rights Council on a democratic and equitable international order, and other experts made a special presentation. Through videos, photos and detailed data, they pointed out the existence of systemic racism in the U.S. and called on the international community to urge the U.S. to abide by its obligations under international human rights law and make immediate structural reforms to eliminate systemic racism.
By reviewing United States cases such as the Chinese Exclusion Act and Korematsu v. United States, Prof. Zhang pointed out that Asian Americans in the United States have been subjected to continued harassment, exclusion and structural discrimination. During the epidemic, stigmatization and discrimination against Asian communities had taken a greater global toll in human lives. Asian Americans should stand in solidarity with minorities, including those of African descent, to defend the rights of minorities in the United States.
The side event was broadcast live on several social media platforms, watched online by more than 4,000 people around the world, and was covered by CCTV News and People's Daily, among other media outlets.
