On October 11, 2019, the third session of the introductory lecture series on law was held in Room 201, the fourth teaching building of the Department of Arts and science. The theme of the lecture was "civil law: the guiding light of life". The main speaker was Professor Meng qinguo, the vice president of Civil Law Research Association of China Law Society and famous national teacher. All 2019 undergraduate students attended the lecture.
At the beginning, Prof. Meng expressed his welcome and congratulations to all the freshmen, and affirmed the positive role of the introductory lectures on law in guiding freshmen into the law palace. Then, Mr. Meng made a brief introduction of his rich life experience, and the thinking of personnel choice, which immediately aroused great interest of the students.
Mr Meng put forward a question that why we should pay attention to civil law. Prof. Meng first answered this question from the perspective of the scope of application of civil law. Civil law was the rule of life, which involved all aspects of life. A person was bound to have a relationship with civil law from birth to death. He roughly analyzed the close relationship between civil legal norms such as contract law, company law, marriage law, inheritance law and personal life. The study of civil law could also make a little contribution to social justice and equity, which made researchers gain a sense of achievement.
After learning about the importance of civil law, Prof. Meng objectively pointed out that civil law involved a wide range of fields. Therefore, he asked the second question that how to learn civil law well. First of all, Prof. Meng pointed out that the study of civil law should be combined with life practice. The rules of civil law were the summary of life rules. In addition, he also suggested that students could read the legal provisions and understand them together with the principles of teaching materials, pay attention to the conflict between the provisions and principles, and think about the deep meaning behind them.
At last, Prof. Meng introduced the system of civil law. He first stressed that the core point of civil law was civil legal relationship, which included three elements, subject, object and content. The subject was the person who took part in the civil legal relationship; the object was the medium which produced the legal relationship; the content were the right and obligation. Prof. Meng finally concluded that the civil law system was centered on legal relations, legal fact was the cause of legal relationship, and legal liability was the consequence of violating legal relationship. He reminded students that this system must be kept in mind.
In the last twenty minutes of the lecture, five students asked questions actively, and Prof. Meng answered them patiently.
After five students' questions, the wonderful lecture came to an end in warm applause of the students. Prof. Meng Qinguo told the students why they should pay attention to civil law, how to learn civil law and the system of civil law, which was helpful to cultivate the law literacy of the freshmen. This was undoubtedly an extremely wonderful law course, as well as an important life guidance.
