China National Rounds of the 12th International Air Law Moot Court Competition 2021 was successfully held online from April 2 to 4, 2021. Teams of China University of Political Science and Law, East China University of Political Science and Law, Civil Aviation University of China, Wuhan University and other universities participated in it. After two days of fierce competition, the WHU team won the team championship, the best brief for the positive side, the best brief for the negative side, the best debater for the positive side (Ruan Jingcheng), and the best instructor (Su Jingyuan), and successfully advanced to the international competition to be held online in May.
Prof. Su Jinyuan served as the coach of this team. Deng Haiting, a master student of 2019, served as the assistant coach. Guan Qianli, a master student of 2018, also provided helpful guidance as the previous team members. The team members include Guan Guowei (master student, Class of 2019), Ruan Jingchengand Fang Jialing (master student, Class of 2020), Xia Xinyue and Zhang Zhiyi (undergraduates, Class of 2018). In the competition, Their excellent performance in the competition was affirmed and appreciated by the judges.
The International Air Law Moot Court Competition, recommended by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and founded by the Institute of Air and Space Law of Leiden University in the Netherlands in collaboration with the Salem Legal Aid Foundation of India, is currently the only world-class air law moot court competition. The competition has been held for eleven years, attracting many prestigious institutions worldwide to attend every year. China national rounds of this year was organized by the Aviation Law Research Society of the Chinese Law Society and China University of Political Science and Law(CUPL), and hosted by the School of International Law of CUPL and Law and the Center for Aviation and Space Law Research of CUPL, with judges Xu Yu, First Secretary of the Department of Treaty and Law of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Lei Ao, International Cooperation Service Center of the Civil Aviation Administration of China, and Zhao Kai of Embraer.
This is the fourth consecutive year that Wuhan University has participated in it. The WHU team won the "Best Debater Award" in the China Regional Selection Competition, and won the "Best Brief Award" for the applicant side, the third place in the oral defense, and the second place overall in the international competition in 2018. The team won the team championship, the "Best Debater Award" and the "Best Pleading Award" in the China Regional Selection Competition, and was awarded the sixth place in the international competition for the applicant's pleading and the third place for the respondent's pleading in 2019. The team members greatly improved their ability to study international law and debate in English.
WHU team won the championship of China National Rounds and successfully advanced to the international competition to be held online in May. In the next month, the WHU team members will work hard together and learn the lessons carefully to write a new chapter of WHU International Moot Court Competition and show the elegance of WHU students in the international competition.
